More About Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu

There are two major superpowers in this fictitious world: The Union of Zirnitra Republics in the east and the United Kingdom of Arnak in the west, ten years after a long war that divided it. Both countries are currently engaged in a space race to see which of their aspirations can be realized first. A grandiose proposal to launch manned trips into space is announced by Premier Gergiev of the Soviet Union in 1960, under the name of the Mechtat Program. The Republic does this by establishing Laika 44, a remote city where cosmonaut hopefuls compete for planned manned space flights and scientists build the necessary equipment in a highly secretive environment.

Irina Ruminescu is a vampire who befriends backup astronaut candidate Lev Leps. When Operation Nosferatu is complete, the Mechtat Program will employ Irina to test out various space-related situations before sending her up on her own as part of a crewed trip. Both have a long-held ambition to go to the far reaches of the universe.

On the 8th of March, 2018, the Kodansha Comic Days website began serializing a manga adaptation with art by Sojihogu. A single tankbon volume was used to store it all. Sojihogu’s declining health forced the adaptation to take an indefinite hiatus in January 2019.

The 17th of March, 2021 saw the announcement of an anime television series adaption. Animated by Arvo Animation, directed by Akitoshi Yokoyama, the series features character designs by Hiromi Kato and music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Series creator Keisuke Makino handles series composition. It will air on TV Tokyo, BS NTV, SUN, and KBS Kyoto on October 4, 2021. ‘Hi no Tsuki’ (Scarlet Moon) is the opening theme song by Ali Project, and ‘Arifureta Itsuka’ (Everyday Someday) is the closing theme song by Chima.
